Crab Tower (AKA SCP-XXXX: "Existential Overtime")
rating: +2+x

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: A unit of MTF Upsilon-Peorð ("Slings and Arrows") has been permanently assigned to SCP-XXXX, and is to herd it away from population centres using a combination of blunt non-penetrating force, loud noise (greater than 200 decibels), bright rapidly-flashing lights, and various forms of irritation (swarming with helicopters, circling with vehicles, etc.). An amemetic1 barrier is to be erected around SCP-XXXX whenever it enters a dormant phase (see description). A method of rendering SCP-XXXX permanently immobile is currently being researched and considered.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a large office block, formerly the regional headquarters of █████ Industrial, capable of locomotion by means of ten mechanical segmented limbs2, two of which terminate in claws. SCP-XXXX displays signs of low-level sentience, showing self-preservation instincts and responding to external stimuli. SCP-XXXX is entirely watertight, accessible only by a single watertight airlock in place of the front entrance, and the interior is filled entirely with a transparent non-organic nutrient-rich fluid.3 This entrance is accessible at times that SCP-XXXX is dormant or immobile, at which point SCP-XXXX will dig its limbs into the ground until the front entrance is ground level and its limbs are hidden. The methods by which SCP-XXXX creates this fluid are currently unknown.

The interior of SCP-XXXX remains largely unchanged from its original layout, with the following notable exceptions:

  • The refitting of the air conditioning system to extract waste products from the aforementioned fluid, and to replenish supplies of said fluid.
  • The waterproofing of many (but not all) electrical installments, such as lights and cameras.
  • A large hollow space at the centre of the fourth and fifth storeys (see Recording XXXX-F for more information).
  • A tightly-packed layout of workstations, each containing a small metal desk and standard office chair (both fixed securely to the floor), and an electromechanical device similar to an abacus, with wires leading from the back to large ports in the floor, ceiling, and walls. ~98% of these workstations are occupied by human subjects, supplied with oxygen by means of clear plastic tubes inserted into the neck. The majority of subjects (designated SCP-XXXX-1) appear to be former employees of █████ Industrial, although other, unidentified instances have also been observed.

SCP-XXXX-1 instances will perform basic calculations (addition, subtraction, incrementation etc.) at their work stations from 09:00 to 17:00, Mondays to Fridays (excluding national holidays). SCP-XXXX is entirely dormant and unresponsive during periods in which SCP-XXXX-1 are not active, suggesting the intelligence of the entity may be an emergent property of the network.

Addendum ##-##-#### | Exploration Log XXXX-001:

MTF goes in via the top, slowly make their way around this dark, flooded office building, noting the strangeness. It's all very clearly human-constructed, but seems too organic for any normal person to build. They enter the fourth floor, which is rammed full of the humans, and attempt to free one of them — this 'hurts' the building, which tries to flush them out. One of the team is knocked unconscious and ejected, one is augmented into the structure, and the others manage to make their way to the 'heart' — a giant white sack, pumped by several dozen workers in suits. "Executives", obviously. They ask for a termination authorisation, it's denied, one gets angry and slashes at it anyway. It rips, they're sucked through and ejected, slasher is reprimanded. Overall result: one unconscious about a kilometre away, one missing and integrated, remainder of the team hurt but alive. Salvaged person is in a constant state of shock (because, you know, crab tower), and dies from infection of the neck-pipe-entry-hole a couple of days later.

Opening Statement:

Exploration Crew: Provisional Task Force Duplic-4 ("Inner Workings"), consisting of:

  • Agent Jessica Waters; Former commander for MTF Zeta-9 and member of MTF Alpha-5, field experience directing teams in anomalous explorations.
  • Agent Langdon Farmer; Navigator for MTF Zeta-9, field experience navigating anomalous locations.
  • Agent John Harrington; Former member of MTF Gamma-6, experienced at navigating flooded or otherwise fluid-filled areas.
  • Dr. Leslie Harrington; Biochemist and paramaterial researcher.
  • D-004590, former oceanic photographer incarcerated for three accounts of murder.
  • Agent 4-B-Mortise; Defector from the Church of the Broken God, selected due to not requiring oxygen, and being immune to most toxic environments.
  • Agent Vincent LaFerrier, no relation.

Addendum 12-06-1998 | Degradation of SCP-XXXX:
After an abnormally long dormant period (a week), the building composing the upper portion of SCP-XXXX collapsed due to accumulated weather damage. The interior had apparently been stripped of all valuable or complex components, and drained of fluid. As well as 28 cadavers, one living SCP-XXXX-1 instance was recovered from the wreckage. Due to psychological damage, the subject has yielded no useful information.

Numerous handmade documents were found littering the containment site, in various conditions and levels of legibility. An abridged list containing only legible documents can be found below; for a full list, contact the leader of MTF Υ-ᛈ or personnel of 4/XXXX clearance.

In addition to these developments, the mechanical lower portion of the entity was entirely missing, with signs of geological disturbance towards the east. Keter classification has been restored, and research is ongoing.
