Item #: SCP-XX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XX instances are maintained in a very large (>220,000 m3), custom-made aviary at Site-53. This shelter is hermetically sealed, with alternating layers of lead (8 cm) and ceramic (4 cm) to inhibit psychic radiation. A Class-XVII biosphere system has been installed inside the aviary, providing artificial sunlight, precipitation, and air (heavily scrubbed to remove pollutants). Additional SCP-XX populations are kept in Bio Area-12 and Site-971.
The aviary is populated with fauna and flora per Document 1037-Z. Whenever possible, maintenance of plants (e.g. trimming and replanting), repopulation of insects, and other maintenance tasks are performed via remotely-controlled drone.
Human interaction with SCP-XX is strictly limited. Personnel wishing to enter the aviary must submit to a full psychological evaluation and receive approval from the SCP-XX Containment Committee. Prior to entering the aviary, personnel must submit to decontamination and don a Class-VIII biohazard suit.
Current research efforts are directed towards:
- Determining additional health risks to SCP-XX instances.
- Determining any methods of treating medical issues experienced by SCP-XX instances.
- Determining means of substantially growing the SCP-XX population.
Description: SCP-XX refers to the anomalous species Locustella vitella, a type of grasshopper warbler, a small bird with telepathic abilities. Due to the low complexity level of insect brains, SCP-XX instances cannot telepathically interpret mental states, and instead only use their anomalous abilities to locate grubs to eat.
SCP-XX in captivity.
Increasing urbanization and literacy among human populations have created a dense psychic environment that is toxic to SCP-XX. Telepathic shielding was effective at preservation its population until the widespread adoption of the internet, which has precipitated a mass die-off.
There are 34,607 (1990) 12,120 (2000) 4,066 (2010) 817 (2020) 54 instances (2025) in containment. SCP-XX is extinct in the wild.
